This Carlsbad Caverns tornado of bats blog is a delightful and descriptive piece of my experience at the Carlsbad Caverns. Can you imagine a tornado of bats, about four thousand? I was standing under the vast, star-studded New Mexico sky as dusk gently blankets the landscape. Visualizing bats exiting from a hole in a mountain at Carlsbad Cavern bat caves.

The caves are in the heart of New Mexico. These caverns are more than just geological wonders. They are home to one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles. The bats form a dark cloud which shadows the moon in the gloomy twilight. No, it is not a horror movie from Hollywood. In fact, it is an amazing event that would send shivers tingling down your spine. The viewing of this spectacular tornado of bats is the highlight of any visit to the Carlsbad Cavern bat caves. The picture painted of this event was beyond comprehension. Yet, I had elevated expectations for my first visit to the Carlsbad Cavern bat caves.

Brazilian free-tailed bats

This is a seasonal spectacle where thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the caverns at sunset for their nightly feeding. It is an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that fascinates and bewilders all who witness it. If you are craving for adventure that is part intrigue and natural splendor, then look no further than the mesmerizing bat flights of Carlsbad Caverns.

Tornado of Bats

The Carlsbad Caverns bat caves have an amphitheater for seating. It provides an excellent view of the tornado of bats exiting the Carlsbad Cavern bat caves. In addition, it also gives people a comfortable seat. As a result, I made an early entrance to the venue. I was anxious and excited about the viewing. It was equally important that I get a good vantage point. I wanted to maximize my view of the spectacle of the tornado of bats. I am at the edge of my seat with a camera in hand waiting for the tornado of bats exodus

Carlsbad Caverns Tornado of bats History.

As the sun set, the forest rangers gave a short presentation. They provided fascinating details about the bats. It is the perfect way to tune into the bats’ unique lifestylebeforewatching them take off on their nightly insect-hunting mission. The presentation highlighted the history of the tornado of bats. The presentation was interesting as it prepared us for the main event. On conclusion, everyone asked to turn off all electronic equipment. That included cameras, phones, and video recorders. The radio waves would affect the small critters.

According to the rangers, the tornado of bats flew Southeast on exiting the Carlsbad Cavern bat caves. On exit, the bats fly towards Mexico in early spring through October. They stay in Mexico for the entire winter. These bats navigate and hunt using echolocation, emitting high-frequency sounds that bounce off objects and return to their ears. During their flight they feast on small insects. A bat would eat about half of its body weight nightly. The bat flight is of tremendous benefit to farmers. Most important of all, the bats reduce the number of insects affecting agricultural produce.

Carlsbad Caverns a Tornado of Bats!

Bats are overly sensitive. Severe changes to the environment affect them. The Carlsbad Cavern bats are no exception. Their numbers have seriously dwindled over the years. The biggest danger to bats is human interference. In addition, the US bat population is dwindling. A new deadly disease called White Nose-syndrome has reduced the population. The name originates from a white fungus which grows around the nose and wings of bats. You can learn of the disease at the US National Wildlife Center website. The fungus awakens the bat during hibernation. It causes them to wander outside during winter where they die. So far, the disease has not affected the bats are the Carlsbad caverns.

Reason for bats no show.

I had elevated expectations for the event. Imagine it is quiet at first, with only the whispers of nature. My eyes look towards the sky. I waited in anticipation to see thousands, yes thousands, of Brazilian Free-tailed bats emerge in a swirling vortex from the mouth of the cavern. It would be a ballet of nature. A choreographed exit with precision and grace, a sight that is sure to leave me absolutely spellbound. Sadly, the forest ranger announced that there would not be a mass exodus of tornado of bats that evening. Only a small insignificant number of critters had left their comfort of the Carlsbad Cavern bat caves that evening.

The number of bats varies that leave the caves nightly. The volume of bats depends on the time of year, weather, and season. The dry spell in the area meant fewer insects for the bats to feast on. As a result, the lack of food and the time of the year could be the factors for the poor showing of the bats. The best bat showing in terms of numbers happens during the fall season. The moisture during that period attracts insects.

It is also my opinion that mesothelioma cancer has an extremely long latency time, which means that the signs of the disease would possibly not emerge right until 30 to 50 years after the preliminary exposure to asbestos fiber. Pleural mesothelioma, and that is the most common form and has an effect on the area across the lungs, may cause shortness of breath, upper body pains, and also a persistent cough, which may cause coughing up bloodstream.
