The Dominican Republic and the Commonwealth of Dominican are two distinct destinations. Although their names are similar, there are significant differences between them. Dominica is often confused with the Dominican Republic. I grew up on the island of Commonwealth of Dominica and visited the Dominican Republic. From a personal perspective, I know there are problems in differentiating the Commonwealth of Dominica from the better-known Dominican Republic. Before adding the Commonwealth to the island’s name in 1978 it was known as just Dominica. During my stay on the island, I am aware that correspondence intended for Dominica went to the Dominican Republic instead. As a result, adding the Commonwealth to Dominica’s name made it distinctive.
