Charles Airport in Dominica. The aircraft slowly climbed out of the dark grey clouds as we made our approach to the island. Suddenly, out in the blue ocean sprung tall towering mountains that seemed to melt into the clouds. The island of Dominica appeared green and misted against the blue-black ocean. The mountains appeared very majestic as they cascaded from the sea. The flight from New Mexico with a change of aircraft in Puerto Rico was uneventful. However, the Dominica coastline was a welcome sight.

Where in the world is Dominica? The island is twenty-nine (29) miles long and sixteen (16) miles wide. The tiny secluded island is not popular internationally. As a matter of fact, the nature island is in the central Caribbean. Interestingly, it is sandwich between the two French islands of Guadeloupe in the north and Martinique to the South. Dominica is an English-speaking country. However, there is a strong French influence on the island. In fact, it was owned and occupied by both the French and English. As a result, the nature island has a local dialect called creole.
You can access the Nature island of Dominica via the main airport in the North of the island. There are no direct flights from North America. However, there are connecting flights from Puerto Rico to the island. LIAT is one of several airlines providing service to the island. In Addition, there is a ferry to and from the neighboring French islands. Dominica is not as popular for cruise tourism as the other Caribbean Island. The island is not known for white sandy beaches. Instead, it offers adventure tourism. The island has several natural attractions and forest adventures. It is ideal for travelers seeking a unique tropical destination in the Caribbean.
Difference between the two Dominica’s
The island is different from the well-known Dominica Republic. That island is in the northern part of the Caribbean. It is much closer to the US mainland. The Dominican Republic is much bigger and shares the island with Haiti. That island is 18, 704 square miles with a population of 10 million. On the other hand, the nature island is approximately 295 square miles with a population of about 75,000 people. The Nature island population is concentrated along the coastline. The interior of the island is very mountainous. In fact, the island is more mountainous per square mile than Switzerland.
I have been to the Caribbean on several occasions. In fact, I was born in the Caribbean. This visit was special. It was on a family vacation. In addition, I planned to explore the island and confirm if she deserved the name as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean.” Numerous people in the region call Dominica the untouched gem of the Caribbean. Also, it is considered as the Cinderella of the Caribbean. I consider her a unique tropical destination to vacation. From my perspective the island appears to be undisturbed and tranquil and has not been negatively affected by the large volume of persons who do Caribbean cruise travel.
