Costa Rica’s background
Costa Rica is in Central America. It lies north of Nicaragua and south of Panama. The Caribbean Sea is on the East coast. Whereas the West coast is the Pacific Ocean. The most admirable thing of Costa Rica was the concept of not having any military. They abolished their military in 1948 and instead focused on investing in education and healthcare. The constitution forbids the establishment of a standing army. Costa Rica’s law enforcement agencies are responsible for all security. The abolition of the military is a significant reason for the country’s peace and stability over the years.
My Costa Rica tropical adventure began on March 16, 2019. I was part of twenty-four persons escorted tour group. The group comprised of travelers from the US and Canada. The four-hour flight from Atlanta to San Jose was uneventful. Thereafter, I checked into our hotel in San Jose.
The Park Hotel was extremely comfortable and in a convenient location. One block from the hotel was a supermarket. In addition, there were restaurants nearby. I spent the afternoon exploring the area close to the hotel.
We traveled by coach to Monte Verde the next day, then to Arenal before returning to San Jose. I am writing separate blogs about my Monte Verde and Arenal experiences.
Costa Rica Tropical Adventure
My tropical adventure started and ended in the capital city, San Jose. It is a typical city with miserable traffic during the peak hours. It was noteworthy that very few tall buildings were visible in the city of San Jose. In fact, skyscrapers are not common with a couple dotting the skyline. Costa Rica is a volcanic country. As a result, earthquakes are a regular occurrence. Therefore, the building codes limit structures to two floors.
I had no difficulty getting around to view city attractions. Taxis are in abundance although it can be a challenge. The Cab drivers speak little English. Also, I was fortunate to know Spanish words. It was helpful although it was not necessary.
San Jose
This was a lay back day during my Costa Rica tropical adventure. In fact, this was a quiet moment during the trip. I took time to explore the city activities of San Jose. Firstly, I visited the National Gold Museum. The National Gold Museum is one of the city’s big attractions. It is located underneath the Plaza de la Cultura. The gold on display is pre-Columbian. I was amazed at the intricate images and designs. The gold collection consisted of figures and coins and historic artifacts. On the other hand, the collection has over 1600 artifacts. It is pre-Columbian gold dating back to 500 AD. The history of Costa Rica currency was on display. The currency is the colon. The display showed the colon history. In addition, it covered the changes in the currency up to the present day.
Jiminez Deredia
Also, a Costa Rican native named Jiminez Deredia had a presentation at the museum. He is known for his monumental marble and bronze sculptures inspired by pre-Columbian cultures. His works often feature smooth, rounded forms that convey a sense of harmony and balance. If you are a fan of art and culture, you might appreciate his magnificent sculptures. His display main theme was pre-Columbian spheres. It emphasized the cultural identity of the pre-Columbian spheres. They were beautiful remarkable sights.
San Jose is a vibrant city full of culture and history. It also boasts of the beautiful Spanish colonial architecture of the National Theatre. The capital is the center of the country. Things to see include the bustling Mercado Central with its colorful stalls selling everything from local crafts to fresh produce. The Mercado Central in San Jose is a bustling market that offers a vibrant mix of local foods, handicrafts, and souvenirs. This market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the Costa Rican culture.
You can find fresh produce, delicious street food, colorful textiles, and unique handmade gifts as you wander through the bustling aisles. The lively atmosphere, filled with the sounds of vendors calling out to passersby and the scent of cooked traditional dishes, makes a visit to Mercado Central a truly immersive experience. It is a wonderful place to pick up authentic Costa Rican treasures and enjoy a taste of local life.
End of Costa Rica Tropical Adventure
I had a fantastic tropical adventure. In fact, it was an amazing time with the group of twenty-four people. The Globus representative served as our tour guide. He made the trip exciting and memorable. My experiences and the knowledge acquired will last a lifetime. Being in a group can be a challenge but our group was very punctual in all activities, and everyone was extremely friendly.
