Visiting Stingray City in Antigua during the summer of 2024 was an exhilarating experience. In fact, it was a slice of heaven exploring Stingray City on the island of Antigua. I have a blog about Antigua is more than beaches. This experience at Stingray City confirms that Antigua has more to offer to its visitors. Although I enjoyed the pristine white-sand beaches and the turquoise waters of Antigua with the sea lapping gently at my feet, I wanted more than the beach life that Antigua offers.
Arrival at Stingray City
My journey began with a short ride from my hotel by bus. I was a member of eight (8) travel advisors doing a FAM on the island of Antigua. A thrilling boat ride followed from the mainland. As we zipped across the sparkling ocean, a sense of excitement built. Overhead, the sun shone warmly, casting glittering reflections on the crystalline sea. The crew entertained us with tales of the friendly southern stingrays we were about to encounter, stirring our anticipation. The boat slows as we approach a shallow sandbar surrounded by coral reefs. This is Stingray City, our underwater playground for the day.
Dance with the Rays
Welcome to Stingray City, Antigua. A hidden gem that is a must-visit when you are in Antigua. In addition, it is a thirst for any traveler with an appetite for adventure and a love for marine life. I was extremely excited about my new Antigua adventure. You can visualize the stingrays being in an enclosed area but I was incredibly surprised to see the area was open and the sting Rays could go and come freely. In fact, I learnt that the sound of the boat’s motor was the attraction that brought the stingrays to the sand bar. The sound of the boat engine was an indication that it was feeding time. That feeding process developed over a period.
The guide shared with us how to interact with the stingrays. He explained that the handling of stingrays was paramount to ensure both the safety of us and the well-being of these gentle creatures. We paid close attention to the briefing given by the instructors. They provided crucial information on how to interact with stingrays safely. By following these guidelines, visitors can have a safe and enjoyable experience at Stingray City. They can also foster a deeper connection and respect for these majestic sea creatures. The following is a step-by-step Guide.
Safety Instructions
1. Keep Calm and Move Gently – Stingrays are naturally curious but sudden movements can startle them. Approach them slowly and calmly. Sudden jerks or splashing can scare them away or cause them stress.
2. Use the Stingray Shuffle – When wading through the water, shuffle your feet rather than taking big steps. This minimizes the risk of accidentally stepping on a stingray, which can cause them to sting in self-defense.
Handling Stingrays
3. How to Touch – Stingrays have a soft, smooth underside and a rougher, sandpapery texture on their top. When allowed to touch, use a flat hand to gently stroke along their back, avoiding the tail area where the barb is located.
4. Stingray Feeding Tips – If feeding is part of the experience, hold the food underwater, close to the sand. Let the stingray approach and take the food from your hand. Always keep your fingers tucked in to avoid accidental bites.
5. Avoid the Barb – Stingrays have a venomous barb near the base of their tail used for self-defense. It is crucial to avoid touching their tail area. Respect their space and avoid any movements that might provoke a defensive reaction.
6. Respect Stingray Space – While it is exciting to be close to these creatures, it is important to respect their space. Do not chase or crowd the stingrays. In fact, let them come to you. They are naturally curious and will often approach if you remain still and calm.
7. Enjoy with Respect – Understand and appreciate that you are a guest at stingray city habitat. Enjoy the moment and take photos. You should relish the experience, but always prioritize the well-being of the stingrays.
Sliding into the waist-deep water, I felt a mixture of exhilaration and awe. Within moments, the graceful stingrays engulf us and glide effortlessly through the water. These gentle creatures are familiar with human interaction and seem genuinely curious about our visit. With the guidance of experienced instructors, I held, fed, and even kissed these magnificent rays. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating. I was skeptical about going into the water to swim at Stingray city. The memory of Steve Irving, the Crocodile hunter from Australia came to mind. He was accidentally kilt in September 2006 while swimming with sting rays. The guide quickly laid my doubts to rest as he explained that stingrays are a very peaceful sea creature. He said the death of Irving was an incredibly sad accident and is unlikely to rehappen if we manage the stingrays properly.
Memories for a Lifetime
As the day draws to a close, the boat ride to the mainland has laughter and shared stories. I felt a deep connection to the sea and its inhabitants. A feeling that will stay with me long after my tan has faded. Visiting Stingray City is more than just an excursion; it is a transformative experience that reminds me of the wonders of the natural world.
Underwater Wonderland
But the adventure does not end with swimming with the stingrays. You can also snorkel in the area. With gear in hand, you plunge beneath the surface to explore a vibrant underwater world. The coral reefs are alive with colorful fishes darting through the coral branches, creating a mesmerizing dance of color and movement. The clear waters provide perfect visibility, allowing you to fully appreciate the marine beauty that surrounds you.
Islands in the Sun
After your underwater escapade, you can go to another secluded island for much-needed relaxation. Here, you can bask in the sun, enjoy a picnic on the beach, or even indulge in beach combing.
