Carlsbad Caverns – where are they? I had a unique experience during the Memorial weekend. I visited the bat caves in Southern New Mexico, (NM). This major tourist attraction is part of the Carlsbad National Park. The caverns formed over millions of years, creating truly awe-inspiring natural sculptures and chambers. The caves at Carlsbad Caverns are a wonderland of natural beauty and geological artistry. Let me provide a vivid description. This article will give you a taste of what you will experience when you get there.
Where is Carlsbad Caverns
It is approximately eighteen miles from the town with the same name – Carlsbad. The caverns are an unbelievable sight and worth any trip. Getting there from Albuquerque is a very boring and unsightly 4-hour drive. The communities between Albuquerque and Caves are extremely far apart. In between them is nothing but a large expanse of bare land. There are shrubs dotted with the occasional tree. The most interesting sight was cows grazing in pastures along the way.
The Carlsbad Caverns of NM were originally called the “Caves Bat.” It got its name because of the numerous bats residing there. According to the history of the area, miners visited the bat caves to extract bat guano. California used the bat guano as fertilizer in their orchards. The early explorers never ventured deep into the bat caves. They were only interested in the excretion from the bats.
Thereafter, a young local by the name of James Lackin White was intrigued by the caves. As a result, he ventured beyond the bats to explore the bat caves. Hence his interest and exploration resulted in the caves becoming a national monument in 1923. It became Carlsbad National Park seven years later.
Carlsbad Caverns
There were no tour tickets on our arrival. So, I had no choice but to do a self-guided tour. The Carlsbad Caverns have a natural entrance. This entrance is a dramatic opening that gives a hint of the vast underground world lying beneath. People entering through the natural entrance do a self-guided tour. This tour is for people in good physical condition. You travel through steep and narrow trails with a descent to 750 ft below ground.
I entered the Carlsbad Caverns the effortless way via an elevator. Whereas the other option is a grueling trek downhill. On exiting the elevator, you enter a large chamber. This area is the visitors center. It contains souvenir shops and a small restaurant. Being in the bat caves 750 ft below ground felt like another world. In fact, it was strange to listen to the quietness apart from the human chatter. In fact, there were no sounds of birds or crickets, only the occasional sound of footsteps interrupting the silence.
Caves Temperature
The cold temperature within the Carlsbad caverns caught me off guard. It was amazing to leave the hot temperature of 90 F above ground. I was experiencing temperature of 56 F within the bat caves. I had summer shorts and a light T-shirt, so I was a bit cold.

My self-guided tour took about a half hour and covered a mile. I was walking at a moderate pace and the areas were dark. Therefore, I recommend the purchase of a light and an electronic audio recorder. The audio recorder provides a walking history of the bat caves. It is a circular walk during which we came across beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. Although, the most notable ones were the twin domes, the totem poles, and the giant domes.
The stalactites hang from the ceiling like organic chandeliers. They are millions of mineral deposits formed over the years. In the reverse were the stalagmites. They were rising from the floor. It was a forest of stone. There were columns where stalactites and stalagmites meet. They join to form majestic columns that support the cavern’s ceiling.
The Big Room
A must see is an area called the Big Room. I did not explore the Big Room because I was on a self-tour. It is a remarkable sight. It is approximately 8.2 acres and contains a bottomless pit. I was excited to venture and explore that area. The Big Room is so vast that thirteen football fields would fit comfortably. The room has scenic trails. These pathways cross each other. Thereby allowing visitors to explore the nooks and crannies. The pathways are well-lit, highlighting features like the Giant Dome, Rock of Ages, and the Bottomless Pit. The bottomless pit is a 140-foot-deep hole that adds to the cavern’s mystery.
Inside the Big Room is the Hall of the Giants, the Painted Grotto, the King’s Palace, and the Queen’s Chamber. The hall of giants has the largest stalagmites and stalactites formations including the towering ‘Giant Dome’. The Painted Grotto is an area that features a dazzling array of mineral coloration. The iron oxide tints the formations in hues of reds and oranges. You must see the Kings’ Palace. That section is only available with a guided tour. The rangers do tours to visit that section of the Big Room because it is a series of chambers filled with intricate and highly detailed rock formations. Whereas the Queen’s Chamber is a stunning beauty. The room has delicate and elegant flowstone formations that create a fairy tale-like ambiance.
Carlsbad Cavern Tours
I was ready to see the sunlight after walking for 2 hours below ground in very mild temperatures. There was a long wait for the elevators. This was due to the enormous number of visitors. After a long wait, I took the elevator to higher ground. The wait was approximately one hour. There are tours available to explore the Carlsbad National Park . A famous tour is the Kings Palace guided tour. The length of that tour takes about an hour and a half. Furthermore, The Forest Rangers do that tour as it goes into the deepest portions of the caves.
I must commend the park authorities for their work in maintaining the Carlsbad Caverns and Carlsbad National Park. People with wheelchairs can easily maneuver around the bat caves. But they require a companion to assist them along the trail.
Carlsbad Caverns is not just about the underground scenery. It is about the entire experience of descending into an alien, silent world where time seems to stand still. It is a journey into earth’s hidden depths that leaves visitors with a profound appreciation for nature’s subterranean wonder.
